There’s magic in it

I remember reading something by Joe Boyd about the fact that the very soul of a recording lies (also) in the way it has been recorded. I agree with that and share the idea that, somehow, what actually happened in that very moment at the studio is what make you fall in love with a song or a collection of songs. Let’s think of the unique musical moments captured, like shining photographs, at studios such as Englewood Cliffs, Muscle Shoals or Hitsville. Get the idea?

It is not only about the compositions being good, the lyrics being sharp or the musicians being smart-assed enough. It is about the magic of combining all of it in that very particular instant, with that very particular vibe. As said, something unique that won’t ever be the same again. Perhaps it’s the love actually happening there, during the recording, and how deep you, as a listener, can get into the sound, what makes the difference between a good record and a great record.

And let me tell you: you’re holding a great record right now. Recorded totally live on studio. No overdubs or extra tracks. Full live take. And hell-yeah, you sure dig it while listening to the covers of Little Walter (‘Mellow Down Easy’) and Sonny Boy Williamson (‘Help Me’).

Risky choices if you take into consideration the energy, the power, the deep truth you’ll find when listening to the original versions of those two Chi-R&B gems from the Chess family. And yet, those, recorded now by this four-piece based in the southern French town of Perpignan, could have been local versions captured on tape then and there. Listen to them and that is exactly where --and when-- you’ll get transported by Paul (Vocals and Harp), Umberto (Guitar), Gavin (Drums) and Oliver (Bass): The Dogtooth Blues Band.

This magic is what truly makes of this 45 a superb addition to the vinyl collections of any proper R&B devotee, lover and aficionado all over the globe.
