The Celibate Rifles had already made their mark at home with their first two albums released on Darlinghurst’s Hot Records label, which contacted Rough Trade to give the band an international release, which would soon result in their first overseas tour and, in time, the recording of their first successful album outside Australia’s borders, “Roman Beach Party”.

With guitarist Kent Steedman as producer, the band began recording at Sydney’s famed Alberts Studio before a misunderstanding led to their being kicked out; from then on they moved back to Rick Turk’s Honeyfarm Studio in Duffy’s Forest, where they had made their first two albums: songs such as “Sometimes,” “Conflict Of Interest,” “Some Kind Of Feeling,” and the hardcore/jazz fusion of the opening track “Bill Bonney Regrets”-now a YouTube favorite-became Rifles classics, thanks in part to the incisiveness of Damien Lovelock’s lyrics-‘Sometimes, when I come home, I just want to go out again, ‘Get up in the morning and do the same thing for breakfast, freeze-dried coffee and multigrain toast’ – dryly underscoring the suburban boredom implied in the album’s title, Their edgy punk, meanwhile, is balanced by the more reflective sounds of “Sentinel,” “Glasshouse” and “No Sign” and the use of cello and bass clarinet.

“Some good tunes, hard,” Kent wryly considers today. “Ironically, almost all of the sentiments are sadly still relevant today…assholes continue to invade countries, drug problems, thankless work and isolation, intrusion into our personal space, destruction of natural places and lack of care or empathy and media manipulation. It’s no wonder this record is turgid…it’s hard and angry in equal measure and sounds very Australian, which is largely my fault…the way I perceived things, I didn’t always have the ability to get out what I felt, but the energy made up for it” (Kent).
