Back in 1977 with Punk and New Wave in full swing Brian Carroll and his partner in musical crime Damon Lyon-Shaw decided to do something about it. The duo had been working together since the 60s with Carroll working at a cutting engineer at IBC Studios. Carroll was a Mod and was unimpressed when Chas Chandler brought in Jimi Hendrix with him for Carroll to cut his first single ‘Hey Joe’. Only when he played it and then cut it in front of them did Carroll realise that Hendrix was special. Carroll also cut most of the early singles by the Who.

As a sideline, Carroll wrote, produced and released material with his collaborator Damon Lyon-Shaw. Bands like The Factory and Five Day Rain whose records hardly sold but are not collectable. Recording under their own steam as One Way Ticket, an album of their material was released by President in 1978 called Time Is Right.

Winding back to 1977, Carroll and Lyon-Shaw decided to record a ‘punk’ record called ‘New Wave’. When they had finished recording New Wave they shopped it around and Simon Napier-Bell was interested in putting it out under the band name Robin Gobbing. Sadly nothing happened and the song was lost in the mists of time.

Back in 2017 I put out an album of unreleased One Way Ticket material for Record Collector. I loved New Wave but it’s direct and abrasive nature just did not fit with the other material on the album The same applied to Jack The Lad which I loved and thought would one day make a perfect B-side to New Wave. Now, finally I’ve decided to put New Wave and Jack The Lad out on a limited edition single.

With his cockney accent and sense of humour to the fore, New Wave its a brilliant track. Carroll’s humour is very much to the fore examining not only this new musical form but the bands who changed direction to jump on the bandwagon. The music is also -from a punk/new wave perspective - superb. The flip side - Jack The Lad - is even more delicious with Carroll’s vocals delighting in the subject of being a bloke around town. It’s like Sham 69 wresting with Blur.

This is a limited edition white label release in a hand-folded picture sleeve.

As you might image, Brian Carroll is delighted that it is finally on vinyl “about ******* time!”
